In February 2025, building permits in the United States decreased by 1%, bringing the seasonally adjusted annual rate to 1.459 million—the lowest since October of the previous year. This figure is slightly higher than the initial estimate of 1.456 million. Specifically, permits for the volatile multi-family segment declined by 3.8%, dropping to 461 thousand. Meanwhile, single-family authorizations experienced a modest rise of 0.4%, reaching 998 thousand, the highest since February 2024. Regionally, significant decreases were observed in the West, which fell by 6.1% to 295 thousand, and the Northeast, which saw a decline of 15.3% to 116 thousand. These losses were balanced by permit increases in the South, which inched up by 1% to 806 thousand, and the Midwest, which surged by 8% to 242 thousand.
