Danish Retail Sales Fall for 1st Time Since 2023

Retail sales in Denmark experienced a 0.1% decrease in February 2025 compared to the same month the previous year, following a downward revision of a 5% increase in January. This contraction marks the first downturn in retail activity since August 2023. The decline was notably seen in food and grocery sales, which fell by 2.7% compared to a 1.4% rise in January, and in clothing, which saw a 3.2% drop following a 4.8% increase. Additionally, there was a marked deceleration in the growth of sales for other consumer goods, which increased by 2.5% compared to 8.1% the month before. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, however, retail trade showed a robust 0.8% increase in February, marking the most significant growth within a year, after a revised 0.2% rise in January.
