Japan Eco Watchers Current Index Rises In December

According to survey results released by the Cabinet Office on Tuesday, public perception of Japan’s current economic situation showed improvement for the second consecutive month in December, while the future outlook slightly deteriorated. The Economy Watchers' Survey’s current conditions index, which gauges the economy's present state, increased to 49.9 in December, up from 49.4 in November. This rise exceeded economists' expectations, as they had predicted the index would remain at 49.4. In this context, a score below 50 reflects pessimism, whereas a score above 50 denotes optimism.

This shift towards a more optimistic view in December was primarily influenced by improvements in household activity, notably in the retail and services sectors.

Conversely, the outlook index, which predicts future economic activity, declined to 48.8 from November’s 49.4.
