The cryptocurrency realm is abuzz with unsettling news: Trezor, a producer of hardware cryptocurrency wallets, faces potential issues due to a data leak affecting most of its clients. The company is bracing for a worsening situation, particularly if hackers are involved, which could significantly damage its customer database and reputation. Trezor's management initiated an investigation into the incident, which occurred on January 17, 2024, and was attributed to a third-party service provider. This unforeseen event happened during the registration of tech support requests and could have potentially impacted the data of 66,000 users who interacted with the company since December 2021. However, an internal audit revealed that the situation might not be as dire as initially feared. Trezor representatives concluded that hackers could have accessed only the clients' emails and names/usernames. Importantly, the company believes that digital assets and wallets remain secure. Trezor emphasized that the hackers used the obtained data to conduct phishing attacks. The company's leadership has informed each affected customer, advising them to stay alert. These warnings proved timely: recently, individuals impersonating Trezor contacted customers who had sought tech support, stating that "to resolve current issues, it is necessary to provide the seed phrase of the cryptocurrency wallet," allegedly needed "to verify the device's firmware." However, the company advises against sharing the seed phrase, as it grants access to the wallet and asset management. Currently, the culprits have reached out via email to only 41 users. Trezor asserts that clients' personal information, including mailing addresses and phone numbers, remained confidential. The company later apologized and reassured that the clients' cryptocurrency wallets are still fully protected.
