Black Lives Matter to become Nobel Peace Prize nominee

On Tuesday, February 2, the Guardian reported on the nomination of the Black Lives Matter movement made by Norwegian MP Petter Eide. He proposed nominating BLM for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

Black Lives Matter is a movement protesting against violence and systemic racism towards the African-American community. "BLM's call for systemic change has spread around the world, forcing other countries to grapple with racism within their own societies," Petter Eide said in his nomination papers.

Black Lives Matter was founded eight years ago by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. The movement emerged in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman who shot African-American teen Trayvon Martin.

BLM was widely recognized in 2014 after protests over the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Last year, the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked a series of protests involving Black Lives Matter. In fact, the protests spread outside the United States.

It was such a burning issue that #BlackLivesMatter became the second popular hashtag in Twitter after #COVID19. The founders of the Black Lives Matter movement are in the lead among the most influential people of 2020 according to Bloomberg.
