More hacking attacks pose threat to US government

According to The New York Times, the number of targets for hacker attacks has increased in the United States. Experts estimated that in the course of the large-scale cyber attacks, around 250 networks could have been affected.

Closer investigation revealed that at least several dozen networks fell victim to cybercrime. It was previously assumed that there were even more networks affected by cyber hacks. The New York Times pinpointed that cybercriminals used servers located in the United States.

Notably, the cyber early-warning system deployed by the Cyber Command and the National Security Agency did not respond to the interventions. In fact, the system failed to track when the cyber attacks started.

Experts suggested that the hacking of the government networks was meant to distract attention. Attorney General William Barr said a massive cyber-attack on the US government was likely carried out by Russia.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also believed those were Russian hackers behind the attack. However, President Trump disagreed with the idea, saying that the scale of the hacking was greatly exaggerated.
