European Commission Requests Information From Amazon Under Digital Services Act

On Friday, the European Commission requested that Amazon (AMZN) furnish additional details regarding the steps it has implemented to adhere to the Digital Services Act (DSA) obligations. These include transparency in recommender systems and their parameters, maintaining an ad repository, and its risk assessment report.

"Amazon is required to provide comprehensive information on its compliance with the provisions concerning transparency of the recommender systems, including the input factors, features, signals, information, and metadata utilized by these systems. Additionally, the company must detail the options available to users for opting out of profiling within these recommender systems," stated the agency in an official announcement.

The European Commission also demands further information on the design, development, deployment, testing, and maintenance of the Amazon Store's Ad Library's online interface, along with pertinent documents related to its risk assessment report.

Amazon is mandated to submit the required information by July 26, 2024.

Upon evaluating the submitted information, the Commission will determine subsequent actions, which may include formally initiating proceedings under Article 66 of the DSA.

"We are currently reviewing the request and collaborating closely with the European Commission. Amazon is committed to the Commission's objective of fostering a safe, predictable, and trustworthy shopping environment," an Amazon spokesperson told Reuters.
