China calls for free trade agreement with EU

It seems that amid the ongoing trade war with the US, China is actively seeking new allies. Thus, recently China has approved a $500 million loan for Belarus. Now, Beijing is ready to turn its attention to Europe seeing it as its main trading partner. In particular, the Chinese authorities have called for resuming negotiations with the EU over the investment pact that were launched back in 2013. At the press conference in Brussels, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) with the EU was China’s top economic priority. He also urged the EU representatives to take the first step towards negotiations - to launch an economic feasibility study. Still, it is too early to talk about signing an agreement. However, China’s eagerness to resume the negotiation process with the EU already shows its increased interest in new partners. According to experts, the preparation of the FTA economic feasibility will require more than one year, while trade negotiations may take a few more years to complete.
