US stocks closed lower, Dow Jones down 0.19%

At the close of the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones was down 0.19%, the S&P 500 was down 0.63% and the NASDAQ Composite was down 1.21%.

UnitedHealth Group Incorporated was the top performer in the Dow Jones Index today, up 10.09 points or 1.98% to close at 520.82. Walmart Inc rose 2.64 points or 1.79% to close at 149.87. Johnson & Johnson rose 1.85 points or 1.04% to close at 179.59.

The biggest losers were Home Depot Inc, which shed 9.25 points or 2.91% to end the session at 308.46. Salesforce.com Inc. shares rose 6.35 points (2.87%) to close at 214.94, while Visa Inc Class A shed 4.17 points (1.83%) to close at mark 223.95.

Leading gainers among the S&P 500 index components today were Phillips 66, which rose 4.76% to 87.44, Valero Energy Corporation, which gained 3.95% to close at 100.50, and Paychex Inc, which rose 3.29% to end the session at 136.89.

The biggest losers were PVH Corp, which shed 6.54% to close at 82.69. Shares of Etsy Inc lost 5.85% to end the session at 134.56. Quotes of Mohawk Industries Inc decreased in price by 5.69% to 130.93.

Leading gainers among the components of the NASDAQ Composite in today's trading were Direct Digital Holdings Inc, which rose 60.47% to 4.14, Hillstream Biopharma Inc, which gained 39.04% to close at 2.03. as well as shares of Adagio Therapeutics Inc, which rose 30.39% to close the session at 5.02.

The biggest losers were Akebia Ther, which shed 66.02% to close at 0.83. Shares of Revelation Biosciences Inc shed 38.32% to end the session at 1.32. Quotes of Calithera Biosciences Inc decreased in price by 34.95% to 0.39.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of securities that fell in price (1904) exceeded the number of those that closed in positive territory (1307), while quotes of 131 shares remained virtually unchanged. On the NASDAQ stock exchange, 2,607 companies fell in price, 1,193 rose, and 188 remained at the level of the previous close.

Valero Energy Corporation shares rose to a 52-week high, up 3.95% or 3.82 points to close at 100.50.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on S&P 500 options trading, rose 2.28% to 19.33.

Gold futures for April delivery added 1.10%, or 21.10, to $1.00 a troy ounce. In other commodities, WTI crude for May delivery rose 3.07%, or 3.20, to $107.44 a barrel. Brent futures for June delivery rose 2.97%, or 3.20, to $110.91 a barrel.

Meanwhile, in the Forex market, EUR/USD rose 0.68% to hit 1.12, while USD/JPY shed 0.83% to hit 121.82.

Futures on the USD index fell 0.56% to 97.89.
