On Monday, March 6, the army of Syria with the support of the Air and Space Forces of the Russian Federation liberated Palmyra.
A city with a centuries-old history and a culture center of late antiquity was controlled by ISIL for a long time. They held the city for almost two years.
For Palmira, the presence of ISIL turned out to be destructive. During attacks and bombing, many ancient monuments of architecture were wiped off the face of the earth. A significant part of the city turned into ruins.
The ISIL militants destroyed the iconic Arch of Triumph, the latest cultural treasure of the ancient site. In August, they leveled two temples of immense cultural significance — the Temple of Bel and the Temple of Baalshamin.
Experts believe that in the future Palmyra can be restored into a beautiful museum.
