The western city of Jeddah was chosen the venue of the event. For three days, Comic Con visitors totaled about 20 thousand Saudis and guests of the country.
Locals say that the event was special for them. It was the Saudi Arabia's first-ever event which could be attended both by women and men.
Despite the fact that the authorities gave permission, the event was not like the usual Comic Con. For example, men and women queued in separate lines outside the venue, and the show ground to a halt each time the call to prayer was heard.
Religious conservatives expressed dissatisfaction and decried the festival as "devil worship."
The first in the history of Saudi Arabia Comic Con took place in early 2017 for a reason. Today the Saudis are trying to deal with low oil prices implementing economic and social reforms that implies the development of the entertainment sector. The authorities hope that in this way they will be able to strengthen the economy which currently rests exclusively on oil.
