Lawmakers in South Korea's National Assembly voted overwhelmingly Friday to impeach President Park Geun-hye over a corruption scandal. The vote was 234-56, with six abstentions.

Let us remind that the scandal surrounding South Korean President Park Geun-hye started several months ago. The politician is accused of sharing classified information and allowing her friend, Choi Soon-sil, to manipulate power from behind the scenes.

Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn will be acting President for the duration of the court's deliberation.

According to media reports, Park Geun-hye resigned the post of the Head of State immediately after the announcement of voting results.

Addressing a farewell speech to her successor, Park Geun-hye asked to avoid the "vacuum" in the economic management and the security area in South Korea.

The country's Constitutional Court will now deliberate the impeachment motion, a process that could take up to 180 days.
