    The former Cuban president Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born in 1926 in Biran, Cuba. His father was growing sugar cane, thus, his family was quite wealthy. When he was 24, Castro graduated the University of Havana with a degree in law. During his university days, Castro joined the Party of the Cuban People.

In 1953, several years after graduation, Fidel Castro went to jail for participation in the Moncada Barracks attack. Castro was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, however, two years later he was released (owing to the public pressure). After imprisonment, Castro lived in Mexico for a year. In 1956, Fidel Castro returned on his native land.

January 1, 1959 is a historical date for the Castro brothers (Raul, Fidel's younger brother, is the current President of Cuba) and their supporters. That was the day when the revolutionary group overthrown Batista. In February 1959, Castro was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Cuba. His brother became the Minister of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces.

The USSR was glad to see changes in Cuba. A year after the successful completion of the Cuban Revolution, Nikita Khrushchev visited the Cuba. This visit marked the start of the friendship between two countries.

In 1963, Fidel for the first time visited the USSR. Castro traveled the country for more than a month.

Fidel Castro was the head of Cuba for 49 years. In 2008, he delegated his presidential duties to his brother, Raul. Fidel continued to hold the post of the First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party for several years. In 2011, these duties were also delegated to Raul.
