Beginning of this week in Poland was characterized by mass protests - country's women refuse to accept the possible law about the total abortion ban. It is noteworthy that Polish legislation is firmly established as one of the most strict in Europe regarding pregnancy termination. Today, Polish women can count on abortion only in case of raping or when it threatens the life or health of the mother and future child.
The Polish law penalizes the illegal pregnancy termination (without important reasons). Not only the freedom of the patient, who goes against the law, is under threat, but also the doctor's.
According to official data, about 30 thousand people took part in the protest action in Warsaw (Poland's capital). Women of the country, using the right to take one vacation day, didn't go to work.
It is known that in Poland, besides Warsaw, there were protests in Krakow, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Bialystok, Szczecin, Poznan and other cities.
The action, held on Monday, was called the "Black protest". All opponents of the pregnancy termination ban were in black clothes.
Dissatisfaction of the Polish women echoed in the hearts of the other European countries' women. For example, in Brussels about thousand women came to the European Commission and Polish embassy. The "Black Protest" supporters also could be found in Berlin.
- A well-known supporter of the protest is the former Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz. In late September, she said that women in the country can not afford to replace conscience with the Criminal Code, so the polish women were not given the right to choose. She also called all the opponents of the abortion ban "hostages of political games."
First disturbances in Poland, connected with the possible law about the total ban on termination of pregnancy, started in September. That's when the Sejm of Poland voted in the first reading for the adoption of this law.
