Great Britain held a referendum on withdrawal from the European Union in 2016. This withdrawal is also called Brexit. Conservative party led by David Cameron said they want to abandon membership in the EU, but the leaders of the world powers and the US are against it. According to former Prime Minister of Belgium Guy Verhofstadt, the only major politician able to insist on Brexit is the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the former Belgian prime minister, Putin has at least three reasons to want the UK to withdraw from the EU. The first of these is the destabilization of the European Union. If Britain does withdraw from the European community, this step will weaken Europe, both military and politically. At the same time, it is likely that ultra-right nationalists will be activated all over Europe, wishing to obtain EU membership on the same terms as London.

The second reason is that if the country leaves the European Union, the sanctions of the European countries imposed on Russia for joining the Crimea are likely to be eliminated. The opinion of the politician is based on the fact that London was their most ardent supporter, and without the participation of Britain, opponents of measures aimed at limiting Moscow's influence will get an advantage.

The third reason why Brexit is beneficial to V.Putin is the dependence of the EU countries on the supply of Russian oil and gas. Previously, Britain advocated the energy independence of Europe, and it is not profitable for Russia, the Belgian politician is sure.

Another politician, Marin Le Pen of the French National Front party, equates the UK's withdrawal from the EU and the destruction of the Berlin Wall. Guy Verhofstadt believes that the Russian leader would agree with her. The politician is sure that the precious time that could be spent with advantage, solving the pressing issues of migration and the fight against terrorism, Brussels will spend on the concessions of the European Union of Great Britain to prevent Brexit.
