The V90 Cross Country, first revealed at last November's Los Angeles Auto Show, is meant to replace the brand's slow-selling XC70. That wagon also sported a raised ride height and all-wheel drive, with a very healthy dash of plastic bodyside cladding. Specifications released by Volvo show the ground clearance of the Cross Country increasing from six inches to 8.2 inches. This car will also be made on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Of course, this new car will get a new exterior and interior inspired by the concept of the Universe who has premiered in 2011.

Volvo Cars representatives are proud of their novelty and claim that V90 is ready for extreme conditions. Customers can rely on Volvo everywhere, irrespective of climate and road. That is why Volvo's cars are tested under the most extreme conditions from Arizona's blisteringly hot desert to the biting cold of the Arctic north. "Our cars have to be able to withstand ambient temperatures between -40 and +60 degrees C. Our aim is to create the best possible car for all climates," says Jan Inge Eliasson, head of the Complete Vehicles Testing department at Volvo Cars.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has accorded to Volvo XC90 a prestigious Top Safety Pick+ rating. This is the highest possible safety rating from the IIHS and is awarded to vehicles that managed to achieve full scores in all crashworthiness and front-crash prevention tests as well as dish out outstanding preventive and protective safety performance.

XC90 received five stars from Euro NCAP during the European safety regulator's 2015 Euro NCAP tests. Remarkably, the XC90 was the first car from any carmaker that was able to get full points in the Autonomous Emergency Braking Car to Car rear-end tests (AEB City & AEB Interurban).
