The Pan American Highway is the longest highway in the world. Remarkably, it stretches across the whole American continent, covering about 48,000 km in total length. It is a network of roads that connects more than 20 countries in the North and South America. The highway runs from Buenos Aires in South America to Edmonton in the United States.

Highway 1, Australia

Highway 1 is the world’s second longest highway. It covers 14,500 km comprising of interconnected highways. The highway includes both single and multilane roads. It runs through all the states in Australia, except Brisbane and Darwin. The construction of the road began in 1955. In 1959, 1974, and 1998 it was rebuilt. The road traffic reaches more than a million people a day.

Trans-Siberian Highway, Russia

The 11,000 km long Trans-Siberian Highway is the world’s third longest highway. The part of the highway from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok, with a section of the Asian Highway network, is called AH-6. It comprises 7 federal highways where it coincides with European route E30 and passes through Kazakhstan. The longest section is the Russian Route M58, or Amur highway, stretching for 2,100 km from Chita to Khabarovsk.

Trans-Canada Highway, Canada

The Trans-Canada Highway, with an overall length of 7,821 km, is the fourth longest highway in the world. Its construction began in 1950 and was completed in 1962. Some parts of the road were under construction until 1971. The highway stretches from Victoria in British Columbia to St. John's in Newfoundland and Labrador. It passes through all ten Canadian provinces and links all major cities in the country.

Golden Quadrilateral Highway, India

The Golden Quadrilateral is the fifth longest highway in the world. Consisting of a network of highways, it connects the four major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. The construction of the large-scale highway with four to six lanes commenced in 2001 and was completed in January 2012. The amount of investments in this project totaled $9.2 billion. The highway features four to six lanes. This highway can handle large traffic flows.

China National Highway 010, China

China National Highway 010, also known as Tongsan Expressway, is 5,700 km-long. This is the longest highway in China. It stretches from Tongjiang City in Heilongjiang Province to Sanya in Hainan Province. It passes through provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong. However, near the Qiongzhou Strait at Hainan, the highway is terminated as cars are ferried across by trains to Haikou in Hainan before reaching the final destination in Sanya.

US Route 20, US

US Highway 20 stretches 5,415 km in the direction of Newport (Oregon) from Boston (Massachusetts). The highway was commissioned in 1926 and reconstructed in 1940. It runs through nine US states. Then, it is split in two by Wyoming Yellowstone National Park. The Western part of the road intersects with US Highway 101, while the Eastern part runs parallel to the largest section of Interstate 90 known as the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Interstate 90, US

Interstate 90 (M-90), which runs from Boston, Massachusetts to Seattle, Washington, is the longest highway in North America. It is 4,860.2km-long. This highway passes through two of the longest floating bridges: the Lacey W. Murrow Memorial Bridge and the Homer M. Hadley Bridge. The construction of the highway was completed in 1985. The first sections of the road were built in the 1950s. The main part of the route runs parallel to US Route 20, passing through 13 states.
