In the fourth quarter of 2024, South Africa experienced foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows amounting to ZAR 7.5 billion, a significant turnaround from the outflows of ZAR 3.2 billion observed in the third quarter. This shift was largely attributed to an upswing in equity investments from parent companies based abroad, as reported by central bank data. During the same period, portfolio investment inflows were recorded at ZAR 33.4 billion, a decrease from the ZAR 45.6 billion noted in the prior quarter. Notably, non-residents increased their net acquisition of debt securities, which included $3.25 billion from two international bonds issued by the national government, surpassing their sales of equity securities.
