Poland stops using Russian gas earlier than expected

Poland is another country that stopped buying Russian gas. The country managed to find a new supplier of energy resources earlier than planned. The news was announced by Piotr Naimski, Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure. He said that Poland rebuilt the earlier existing supply chains and began receiving energy from other producers. Piotr Naimski pinpointed that a transition to new energy suppliers occurred faster than anticipated. The gas contract was supposed to expire in December 2022. Piotr Naimski promised that the country would avoid the energy deficit. “I can assure you that if the external conditions do not change, there will be gas. Unless there is some sort of a cataclysm, gas supplies will be ensured under predictable conditions,” Naimski added. To replace Russian gas, Poland is planning to use its own gas resources and buy gas from other countries. However, the country will have to pay more for gas. Notably, Poland imported from Russia about 9 billion cubic meters of gas a year. This is less than a half of the country’s yearly consumption. On April 27, Russia's Gazprom cut Poland and Bulgaria off from its gas for refusing to pay in rubles.
