Stellantis Recalls 194K Hybrid Jeep SUVs Over Fire Risk

Stellantis N.V. (STLA) announced on Tuesday the recall of 194,245 plug-in hybrid electric Jeep SUVs to address a potential fire risk. This recall includes 154,032 vehicles in the United States, 14,038 in Canada, 673 in Mexico, and 25,502 in various markets outside North America.

The models affected are certain 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVs and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe SUVs. Stellantis estimates that around 5% of the recalled vehicles might have the defect that could lead to a fire.

According to the company, the recall was prompted by the discovery of 13 fires during a routine review of customer data, which led to an internal investigation. These incidents occurred while the vehicles were parked and turned off.

Pending a permanent fix, Stellantis advises owners of the recalled vehicles to park away from structures and other vehicles and to refrain from recharging the SUVs. The company has observed that the fire risk diminishes when the battery charge level is low. Owners are urged to follow the instructions in their recall notices. Stellantis is in the process of notifying affected customers and scheduling service appointments.

Earlier in September, Stellantis recalled approximately 1.5 million Ram pickup trucks worldwide due to a software issue that could disable the electronic stability control system. This recall was for specific models from 2019 and from 2021 through 2024, predominantly in North America.

In June, Stellantis recalled nearly 1.2 million vehicles in the U.S. and Canada to fix a software glitch that could disable rearview cameras. This recall included certain 2021-2022 Dodge Durango, 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, 2022 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 models, as well as 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, and Ram Promaster vehicles.
